Learn More About Panda Conservation Day

On January 17, 2018, during the commemoration of the 65th anniversary of panda conservation in New China and the first Panda Conservation Week press conference, it was proposed that January 17 be recognized annually as “Panda Conservation Day,” with the week from January 17 to January 23 designated as “Panda Conservation Week.”

The date was chosen in memory of a key moment in panda conservation history. On January 17, 1953, four villagers from Baima Village in Dujiangyan walked nearly 60 kilometers to bring a six-month-old giant panda cub to the newly constructed Chengdu Baihuatan Zoo. Unfortunately, despite the rescue efforts, the panda cub, named “Daxin,” showed signs of poor health, including lethargy, loss of appetite, paralysis, and respiratory distress, and sadly passed away in the early hours of February 5. Although this initial attempt at raising a panda in captivity did not succeed, it marked the beginning of China’s panda conservation and research journey.

Progress in Panda Conservation

Since the founding of New China, the government has invested significant resources into panda conservation, making remarkable progress in various areas, including protection management, scientific research, establishing protected areas, and public education. These efforts have led to a steady increase in the endangered panda population. By October 2017, the global population of captive-bred pandas reached 520, with a total wild panda population of 2,384.

Establishing Panda Conservation Day

To encourage society to treat the environment as they would life itself, several organizations, including Xingfu Bank, have continuously advocated for January 17 to be officially designated as Panda Conservation Day. This effort promotes a broader societal shift towards becoming protectors of pandas, guardians of green habitats, and practitioners of green consumption and eco-friendly lifestyles, contributing to the development of ecological civilization.
