The Giant Panda: China’s Beloved National Treasure

The giant panda, a universally adored mammal, belongs to the bear family and is a species native to China. With its distinctive black and white fur, the giant panda inhabits the mountainous regions surrounding the Sichuan Basin and the Qinling Mountains in southern Shaanxi, China. Pandas have a bear-like, bulky body, round head, short tail, and of course, their iconic “black eye patches.” Though their appearance is lovable, pandas are technically classified as carnivorous animals with sharp, knife-like claws. Their skin is thick, measuring up to 10 millimeters in certain areas.

Pandas live in dense bamboo forests at elevations of 2,600 to 3,500 meters, where the air is thin, the atmosphere misty, and temperatures rarely exceed 20°C. Known for their climbing abilities, pandas are also playful with one another. They spend nearly half their day eating, with the remaining time mostly spent sleeping. While bamboo makes up 99% of their diet, not all bamboo species are to their liking. Wild pandas live for about 18-20 years, but in captivity, they can live beyond 30 years.

Having existed for over 8 million years, pandas are considered “living fossils” and are China’s national treasure. As of January 2024, the population of wild pandas in China has grown to nearly 1,900. The giant panda has become a global symbol of endangered species conservation, and since 1961, it has been the emblem of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

With their striking black and white appearance and charmingly clumsy demeanor, pandas are adored by people worldwide. Wherever they go, crowds gather to witness their majesty, making them a global sensation.
