Healthy Panda Twins in Berlin Zoo: Limited-Time Public Viewing

In June 2017, giant pandas Meng Meng and Jiao Qing arrived in Berlin for a 15-year stay at the city’s zoo. This August, Meng Meng gave birth to twin cubs. Starting from October 16, the panda cubs will be available for limited public viewing. To mark the occasion, Berlin Zoo held a press conference on October 15, showcasing one of the cubs to the international media.

Panda Cubs Transition to Public Viewing

According to the zoo, the cubs have moved from incubators to small cribs, and the exhibit area is fitted with bulletproof glass to ensure that the cubs are not disturbed by visitors. After consulting with Chinese experts, the zoo has gradually opened the panda exhibit, giving the public a chance to witness the early stages of the cubs’ growth.

Berlin Zoo Director Andreas Knieriem expressed his excitement, stating, “We’ve reached the important day where the panda babies are ready to meet the public. Initially, they will be on display for just one hour each day, with possible extensions in the future. This is a global event for panda fans. Though small at just 2.5 kilograms, the cubs already resemble giant pandas.”

Promoting International Collaboration

Berlin Zoo emphasized that giant pandas have long served as ambassadors of friendship between Germany and China. Moreover, the zoo underlined that protecting endangered species and preserving biodiversity are shared global responsibilities. The zoo hopes that these panda cubs will foster further international cooperation, encouraging action on rare species conservation and ecological issues.

Twins Thriving in Their New Home

Veterinarian Franziska Satt confirmed that the twins and Meng Meng are in excellent health. “One cub is always with Meng Meng, being nursed or sleeping, while the other is on display. The twins have shown remarkable growth since their birth, and we are all thrilled with their progress.”
