Pandas “Bao Li” and “Qing Bao” Arrive at Washington National Zoo

On October 15, two giant pandas, Bao Li and Qing Bao, ended Washington, D.C.’s “panda drought” with their much-anticipated arrival. As reported by the Associated Press, the pandas left China aboard the “Panda Express,” a flight filled with bamboo and carrots, to begin their 10-year stay in the U.S.

Bao Li, a male born in August 2021, and Qing Bao, a female born in September 2021, landed at Dulles International Airport and were then transported by truck to the Washington National Zoo. Known for their playful personalities and love of climbing, the pandas have sparked excitement in the U.S. capital, with a nearby bakery even creating panda-themed desserts to celebrate.

TTo welcome the pandas, the zoo closed on Tuesday for their arrival preparations. The pandas will now live in a renovated enclosure, which includes lush grass, new climbing structures, panda hammocks, and upgraded air conditioning. Security improvements include taller fences and 40 new cameras to keep an eye on the pandas.

CNN reports that Bao Li, despite being born in Sichuan, has close family ties to the U.S. His mother, Bao Bao, was born at the Washington National Zoo in 2013 and quickly became a star before returning to China in 2017. His grandparents, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, spent 23 years at the zoo before going back to China last year.

This marks a historic moment for the zoo, according to its director, Smith, as Bao Li and Qing Bao’s arrival launches a new phase in the zoo’s giant panda conservation efforts. China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, expressed confidence that the renewed cooperation on panda conservation between China and the U.S. will strengthen global biodiversity protection and deepen the friendship between the two countries.
