Famous Star Fu Bao: The First Giant Panda Born in Korea

Fu Bao, a female giant panda born on July 20, 2020, at Everland in South Korea, is the first Chinese panda born in Korea. Her parents, Ai Bao and Le Bao, are both giant pandas loaned from China.

On the evening of July 20, 2020, after an hour and a half of labor, Ai Bao gave birth to Fu Bao at 9:39 PM local time. Fu Bao was 16.5 cm long and weighed 197 grams at birth. Following her birth, a public vote was held to name the panda, and “Fu Bao,” meaning “a treasure bringing happiness,” won first place with 17,000 votes. On January 4, 2021, Fu Bao made her first public appearance in Everland’s “Panda World.”

Playful and energetic like her father, Fu Bao quickly became a global sensation. At five months old, a video of her hugging her keeper’s boots went viral, garnering over a million views. Her popularity soared, and she even has her own album. On July 20, 2023, Everland hosted a celebration for her third birthday, with numerous visitors attending to wish her well. Chinese Ambassador to Korea Xing Haiming also attended and awarded a plaque of appreciation to her caretakers, Kang Cheol-won and Song Yong-gwan.

According to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), giant pandas born overseas must return to China before reaching breeding age (around four years old). On April 3, 2024, Fu Bao left Everland in Gyeonggi Province and safely returned to Chengdu, China, under the joint supervision of both nations.

Fu Bao then entered the quarantine zone at Wolong Shenshuping Panda Base for a month-long isolation. On the same day, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin welcomed Fu Bao’s return and expressed gratitude to her Korean caretakers. On June 11, 2024, Fu Bao moved into Panda Kindergarten Hall 2 at the Wolong Base.

Finally, on June 12, 2024, Fu Bao made her official public debut at the Wolong Shenshuping Panda Base, marking her joyful reunion with her homeland.
