Hua Hua: The Most Famous Panda Influencer

Hua Hua, whose official name is “He Hua,” was born on July 4, 2020, at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Weighing just 200g at birth, she quickly became well-known for her distinctive appearance and remarkable cuteness.

Hua Hua is now a household name and holds a “PhD” in the panda world. She serves as the image ambassador for the Chengdu Panda Base and was even an honorary figure for the World University Games. Recently, she was appointed the honorary director of the Chengdu Tourism Bureau, further solidifying her fame.

On various social media platforms, Hua Hua has gone viral numerous times, topping search trends and earning the nickname “top-tier female celebrity” from her fans. She has several affectionate nicknames, including Hua Hua, Pang Hua, Director Hua, and Guo Lai. The most popular nickname, “Guo Lai,” comes from a local dialect meaning “come here,” a term her caretakers frequently used when calling her back home. Now, whenever Hua Hua hears “Guo Lai,” she responds.

At the Chengdu Panda Base, visitors from around the world queue for hours just to catch a glimpse of Hua Hua. Despite waiting 2-3 hours, each person is only allowed a brief 3-minute encounter with the adorable panda, underscoring her immense popularity.

Hua Hua’s gentle temperament is another reason she is so beloved (despite being part of a species known for its strength). Even at two years old, she remains one of the few pandas that allow close interaction with caretakers. She enjoys sitting in a basin while her caretakers “wash” her with towels, rubbing her face and giving her a bath. Remarkably, she understands human language, cooperates with visitors for photo ops, and often raises her paw to “say hello.” Even with her siblings, Hua Hua is mild-mannered. Sometimes, her siblings steal her bamboo shoots, but she never seems to mind.

Hua Hua is the only panda at the base who struggles to climb trees—not due to laziness, but because of a natural outward turn in her right hind paw. This also makes her a slower runner compared to other pandas, but it adds to her clumsy, adorable charm. In one viral video, she is seen trying to catch a small bird, slowly creeping up as if she hadn’t noticed it, then inching closer to pounce. In another, she holds a bamboo stick in front of her face, as if cradling a bouquet, leading fans to dub the moment “half-hidden behind bamboo leaves.”

Hua Hua has a twin sister named “He Ye” and several other siblings, including her famous older brother Gong Zai, the inspiration behind “Kung Fu Panda’s” Po. Other siblings include He Qi, He Mei, He Xing, He Sheng, He Feng, and He Yu.
