Meet Meng Lan: The Escape Artist Panda

Meng Lan Panda (also known as “Meng San” or “Meme’er” in Sichuan dialect), is a male giant panda born on July 4, 2015, at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Weighing just 179.8 grams at birth, Meng Lan has since become a social media sensation, celebrated for his adorable looks inherited from his parents. His parents’ lineage places him as the “third child” on both sides, making him a prominent third-born among the pandas born in Chengdu in 2015.

In September 2017, Meng Lan was flown back to Beijing, debuting at the Beijing Zoo on October 16. Fans were delighted but also concerned when he experienced a series of moves and weaning between 2016 and early 2017. However, Meng Lan maintained his cheerful, optimistic demeanor, often showcased with his “signature smile” and growing appetite.
On December 15, 2021, Meng Lan made headlines as he managed to climb out of the Olympic Pavilion enclosure at the Beijing Zoo, catching sightseers’ attention with his daring escape. The zoo staff skillfully lured him back with food, knowing Meng Lan’s weakness as a “little foodie.” This was not his first attempt, though; he once climbed over a wall by standing on a ball and gripping a spray pipe, cleverly breaching his habitat’s perimeter.
Meng Lan Escape

Meng Lan’s “great escapes” continue to amuse and surprise the public, sparking discussions online. His latest “escape” on October 22, 2024, caused a social media stir, with the Beijing Zoo stating that Meng Lan is not only highly intelligent and playful but also the largest panda in the Beijing Zoo Panda Pavilion. Meng Lan’s spirited personality and adventurous escapes have earned him admiration as one of the most beloved pandas at the Beijing Zoo.
