The Unique Panda: Qi Zai
Qi Zai, born in 2009, is a brown male giant panda native to the Qinling Mountains in China. He holds the distinction of being the only captive brown panda in the world and resides at the Qinling Panda Research Center in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province. His rare brown-and-white fur has earned him the title of the “Treasure Among Treasures.”

Discovery of a Rare Panda
On November 1, 2009, villagers discovered Qi Zai in the Foping National Nature Reserve in Shaanxi. His unusual coloration made him a striking find, quickly gaining fame as the “Chocolate Bear.” Experts believe that his unique fur may relate to the distinct geographical and climatic conditions of the region. Since 1985, Qi Zai has been only the fifth brown-and-white panda ever discovered.
When he was just a cub, local villagers found him abandoned and in urgent need of rescue. After learning that he hadn’t eaten for several hours and was in a weakened state, the Shaanxi Rare Wildlife Rescue Research Center sprang into action. They saved him and cared for his needs. His unusual appearance led to his nickname “Qi Zai,” inspired by the extraterrestrial creature from the film CJ7.
Growth and Development
By the time he turned six, Qi Zai had successfully completed his second flood season at the Foping base for panda rehabilitation. During this time, he gained weight, going from a mere 89 kilograms to over 100 kilograms, transforming into a chubby “Chocolate Bear.” Qi Zai enjoys a diet of over 40 kilograms of bamboo daily. His health remains stable, and he has shown significant improvements in strength, wildness, and instinct.
On November 20, 2019, Panda International announced a lifetime adoption for Qi Zai. This recognition highlights his importance in panda conservation efforts. Today, he is also a father; his cub, Rongrong, celebrated her second birthday on July 27, 2024.
